The Limits of Traditional Post-Stroke Rehabilitation
One of the main problems with traditional rehabilitation is the shortage of facilities and professionals truly specialized in the neurocognitive approach known as the Perfetti Method. During the initial phase of the rehabilitation pathway offered by the national healthcare system, it is extremely rare to find an intervention that is genuinely neurocognitive. Most facilities focus exclusively on muscle strengthening, overlooking the fact that the actual damage caused by a stroke affects the brain and requires an intervention targeting the cognitive processes underlying movement.
Another significant problem concerns continuity of rehabilitation care. After the period of care guaranteed by the healthcare system, the patient needs to continue the therapeutic pathway privately. However, even in private care, it is very difficult to find professionals and centers truly specialized in neurocognitive rehabilitation. Moreover, when they are found, the rehabilitation proposal again tends to be intensive and short-term, limited by the patient’s financial resources. This model does not ensure the necessary continuity and leaves the patient needing to continue treatment independently at home, often without adequate guidance.
